Black Sabbath 1974-02-11 International Amphitheater, Chicago, Il.

BLACK SABBATH - "Love In Chicago"

DATE : February 11th, 1974

VENUE : International Amphitheater, Chicago,  Il.

RUNTIME: 75:30
This is an upgrade from this torrent, which had two defective tracks, and this torrent which is now
lossy as it was from a cassette of a copy of this LP.

This is a direct transfer from vinyl. The original tape used to make the vinyl boot has not surfaced
as of this writing so all copies come from vinyl source. The LP I used is a first press on Berkeley
Records which is believed to be the very first vinyl issue of this concert. I will post scans of the cover
in the comments in the event someone would like to make some artwork for this.

This was a bit of a job to transfer. The 37 year old boot LP was clean but there were spots of
surface noise and crackling, along with many random ticks and pops common to 70's boot vinyl.
Before playing each side, I cleaned it thoroughly by hand using soft cloths and
distilled water. I increased the stylus weight to 2.5 grams (except for one spot in KYTL where I
had to lighten it so it would play through a skip) and I kept the surface of the record wet
while it played, as this helps work loose a lot of the gunk you find in vinyl grooves and helps
cut down surface noise and crackle.

I have not applied any electronic equalization or noise reduction to this torrent. I did manually edit
a number of loud pops from various songs but I did not run any vinyl "restoration" programs on any
of these tracks. My goal was to present it in it's most unadulterated form. If someone wants
to "remaster" using these tracks, be my guest.

As in my previous version, I have placed "War Pigs" after "Snowblind" which is most likely where
it appeared in the original set. The original vinyl bootleggers obviously moved a few songs around to
fit the time limitations of LP sides. I compaired with other sets from this tour and that seems to be it's
logical placement. I was careful to watch the turntable speed for correct pitch as my previous
torrent seemed to run a little fast in spots.

Until the original tape for this show surfaces, this is about as lossless as it gets.

"Mason B. Taylor was a taper from Chicago that recorded concerts by many bands in the Chicagoland area and on Dead tours. He used a Nakamichi 550 with Nakamichi 300 mics with shotgun capsules for most of his earlier recordings. In later years he used Sony D-5 and Sony D-3 cassette recorders with Nakamichi 300 mics.

Mason captured spectacular musical moments and loved to share them with his closest friends. In honor of Mason and all the love he put into his recordings we are now able to share these moments with those who can appreciate them most.

As the shows get uploaded we would love for you to share your stories about the epic times the music evokes so we can all dial back into that moment when the magic was happening.

Thanks to Mason’s family and his Chicago and Cleveland friends for opening up Mason’s Jar…"

suggest. Note that the last track on Disc 1 and the first track on Disc 2 can be joined
together without a loss of continuity.

Great second concert of the Japanese Jazz Tour 1979. It has very good sound quality, so it's highly enjoyable. It features the complete concert. Only the Guitar Solo has a cut in the middle as the tape was probably changed. Nice concert overall and really nice to have. A few tiny clicks can be heard here and there and the pitch runs a bit slow, but nothing major. CD copy from master tape. I have another source of this concert with better sound quality. No copy errors. Not from mp3.

- A wonderful recording of an interesting show that includes
a few relatively rare (for the era) tunes in set I.

- d1t01 How Sweet It Is cuts in harshy, not much missing
- d2t04 Dear Prudence clips in, very little missing

Thanks to Harry Angus for the source discs!

Comments: This was from a low generation, mono source. I used Wavelab
to give the recording some depth, increase the bass, and dehiss it a
bit. JB found the source for this, and patched a couple
spots that were missing due to tape flips with the alternate
recording. There were some small pops throughout which were
a "feature" of the original recording. I repaired the really
noticeable ones, including one spot in "The Remembering" where I was
able to patch from another section in the song. I can't for the life
of me even remember where I did that now.

This is believed to be from a different recording than the Toads tree
that Shaun ran last year.

JB adds:
This is indeed a different tape, and the credit for unearthing it
actually goes to Dirk Uther, the fabulous ELP collector.

Seems the 2nd Boston taper was in a great spot for the show and the
crowd was about as mellow as you can find. The tape flips really
hurt, though. 1 in RSOG & the other in Ritual. But this tape
provides interesting peices missing from the other tape. Mainly,
there was no intermission! They go right from CTTE to RSOG.
Plus you get to hear Jon begging them to stay and put up with
Topographic Oceans-- and you wonder why they don't want to
play this stuff on stage again?

Happy Listening!

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978.  His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity.  In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes.  He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings.  In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands:  Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated.  Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes.  No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers.  Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community.  Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Additional comments:
Audience recording from the City Hall in Newcastle. Very special because it is one of the rare times they play in the hometown of Mark Knopfler and Alan Clark. Cool version of In the Gallery (as usual with the late 1980 versions). Interesting intro to Down To The Waterline. Mark talks a lot between the songs which is not so usual. He tells the story about Les Boys accompanied by the band who plays some disco music and Mark even sings some. Alan improvises a lot and then plays the usual Lili Marlene intro. The most interesting version of Les Boys. Nice overall performance. Sound quality is not perfect but enjoyable to listen to. Available on two CD-R's.

Disc 3 [50:12]

General Notes:

Given the multiple sources available on the Llama, I decided to put the
effort into editing a matrix of all three nights from this wonderful run
at the Uptown. The Glassberg AUDs are very nice and full, standing on
their own as excellent representative recordings.  The SBD sources of all
three nights have the reputation of being some of the crispiest boards
out there, and after a simple test on the Ship O' from the 3rd night I was
motivated to dive into editing land. The result is a worthwile listen,
especially when you turn it up.

Timeline/Tracking Notes:

No music is missing as both sources have excellent coverage.  However,
in order to fit the first set on one 80 min. disc, I edited out some
crowd in between songs, crossfading so the transitions are smooth.
The transition between the disc 2 and 3 can be put together seemlessly.

Editing Notes:

- Pitch
Both sources were pitched differently, the AUD being the sharpest,
and the SBD being the flatest.  I used the SBD as my master timeline
and pitch referenced the AUD to it. The AUD on average had to be pitched
down about -.18 (18 cents) to achieve pitch correction - 1.00 being
100 cents which is a semitone.  I did not reference A=440 as I did not
desire to pitch adjust the SBD.  It is very close though to A=440.

- Synch
Even after pitch correcting the other two sources to the FOB AUD,
because of the speed fluctuation within a given source, multiple edits
were performed to keep the sources synched.  Because the SBD was my
master pitch and time ref, the AUD was synched to the SBD (too many
edits to list).

- Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio
I did choose to employ a slight amount of limiting to the SBD (Waves L2)
to give it a slight amount of punch and presence. Conceptually,  all
I was trying to do here is to add some dimension to the SBD, which is
pretty dry but very crisp, by using the ambience of the AUD. The result
is a lively but clear recording, hopefully close to how it sounded at
the show. If I had to guess the SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between
3:1 and 4:1, leaning more towards the 4:1 end of things.

- Edits
The following are places where the SBD and AUD had holes or
incomplete coverage in reference to the final matrix timeline.

d1t01 (5:36:36 - 5:37:52) - missing
d1t01 (9:11:60 - 9:14:25) - missing
d1t01 (9:49:42 - 10:34:52) - missing (crowd)
d1t03 (9:10:00 - 9:35:45) - missing (crowd)
d1t04 (9:49:42 - 11:15:42) - missing (crowd)
d1t06 (5:41:04 - 5:50:58) - missing (crowd)
d1t07 (7:40:17 - 8:24:25) - missing (crowd)
d1t08 (5:00:24 - 5:31:59) - missing (crowd)
d1t09 (8:29:73 - 9:10:56) - missing (crowd)
d2t01 (0:00:00 - 1:29:01) - missing (crowd)
d2t04 (7:19:41 - 8:09:50) - missing (crowd)
d2t06 (0:47:45 - 0:54:34) - missing
d2t04>5 (9:20:03 - 0:10:34) - missing
d3t06 (4:18:67 - 5:22:62) - missing (crowd)
d3t03 (2:21:67 - 2:22:42) reduced volume by 7dB due to vicious feedback

d3t03 (2:21:67 - 2:22:42) reduced volume by 17dB due to vicious feedback
Set 1 had parts of the crowd in between songs edited out so as to fit
the whole set on one disc.

Note that alot of the missing elements from the SBD source are just
crowd segments except for the 2 cuts in Stranger, a cut in the post
He's Gone jam, and a cut in the transition from Black Peter to GDTRFB;
other than that, all of the music is intact.

Thanks to Dick Latvala for transfering the SBD casette master to DAT,
Jim Wise for the noise reduction and conversion to CDR, and Jamie Lutch
for minor editing and shn conversion. Thanks to Barry Glassberg for
recording the AUD source, and John Steinthal for converting it to CDR,
and Matt Vernon for the shn conversion.  Thanks to Jonathan Aizen for
uploading both sources to the Llama.

Happy 24th Anniversary & Enjoy!!!

To recap all the masters series are taken direct from the Master Copies and then authored in Tempgenc DVD Author 6. The original of this film was filmed in HD using a Panasonic Camcorder onto memory cards. I was therefor able to transfer these via the PC and author from there.

Menu is blue, no frills... 5 chapters with 4 tracks each chapter.
No menu music. Nice that's it's split by track.

killerwolf13 notes:
I just watched the dvd files on my pc to check & take notes below.

Taper does a pretty damn good job filming. Pretty steady camera work.
May have used a tri-pod. But I may be wrong...
The Audio is a bit loud & distorted. My PC speakers are not that good though.

Bruce "Scream for me Saint John!" 2 Minutes to Midnight.
Technical problem on stage during end of "2 Minutes to Midnight"

During "Clansman" taper has some unsteady camrea work & may have had to hide for a few.
Then goes back to mostly steady for the rest of the "The Clansman".

Bruce mentions Saint John & News Brunswick throughout show.

Camera stops after "Powerslave"
Starts recording again with Bruce talking about recording new cd > "Phantom of the Opera"

Camera angle & is hidden after "Phantom of the Opera" & few a few seconds of "The Evil That Men Do"

After "Iron Maiden" band leaves is turned off.
Camera comes back on during "The Number of the Beast"
with Bruce starting at "I lived alone. My mind was blank..."

1 hr 43 minutes (show)

Interview is about 10 minutes or so.

Backstage Interview before the show with Steve Harris & Dave Murray:

Talks about Ed Hunter cdrom & more.

After the interview some footage of a meet & greet before the show.
(SOUND is low for on this part)
Janick, Dave, Nicko, & Steve autograph signing for fans.
Not sure if Bruce & Adrian showed up. tape ends.

Overall a good bootleg.
