Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

While I have not been the fondest of these 1977 Zep shows
(don't get me wrong though; they are still good to have),
this one so far gets my points for favorite show. The sound
isn't too bad either. I think Zep skipped SD on the 1975 tour,
as the comments from the band seem to say that it had been while
since they had been in San Diego. But the crowd gets treated to
quite a performance on this night. This is a must-have from this tour.

Known Faults:
-Beginnings of most songs cut
-Resurrection: end cut

Fate, serendipity, happy coincident or simple good luck...whatever you want to call the emergence of a 46 year old previously uncirculated recording that has been remarkably preserved for almost 5 decades, one thing is for sure, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to 2 Bruce fans on a recent excursion to Asbury Park that stumbled onto a historically important find.

First off, a little about the discovery, taking a trip to Asbury Park for the Light Of Day show, JL member "DGPIRL"  and Bruce fan "TAD" took an Uber to dinner before the show. As will happen in Asbury Park, "TAD" decided she'd ask about the driver's local connections to the area after finding out he was a life long resident. Of course the conversation turned to Bruce and the driver mentioned his brother had taped one of Bruce's last Steel Mill shows and he had a copy he listened to in the car. Not knowing for sure if this was something brand new and after a bit of back and forth haggling, "DGPRIL" struck a deal to purchase the CDR's, the driver only agreed after he was reminded he could get another copy from his brother.

Guessing he had at least made a deal for a low generation Steel Mill show but still not knowing if it was something brand new or not, data files were forwarded to me for research.  Based on the set list and the inclusion of "Train Ride" with Robbin Thompson providing lead vocals, I was able to narrow the date down to between October 1970 and January 1971 and to my surprise it appeared to be a brand new un-circulated show. What are the chances after 46 years two fans would come across a brand new show during a random Uber ride. Still not 100% convinced and with further detailed research needed, I sent the files to Pete at Brucebase to ensure it was not an already circulating show and to see if it could be specifically dated with a high level of certainty.

So how did we arrive at January 22nd, first clue comes from the driver stating it was his brother that taped the show and it was one of Steel Mill's last.
In addition, Pete helped identify a number of clues in the recording itself.
Our biggest indicator of the date comes towards the end of the show when the band gives a 90 second stage announcement, I believe Robbin is talking and comments about the importance of the club as the only place where they can play and jam, not necessarily with Steel Mill, and it needs to stay open. This is clearly referring to The Upstage. In addition, Bruce comments about Danny Federici's legal issues that arose from the incident at the Clearwater Swim Club in Atlantic Highlands in September 1970, and his subsequent guilty plea that took place sometime in November.
You can read more about that incident here:
https://brucebase.wikispaces.com/1970#110970
Finally, mention is made there will be a jam session later in the night and that the band will be playing tomorrow night as well and we know that Steel Mill's last show took place on the 23rd.

The set is very similar to the January 18th set at the D'Scene, it is possible this show is complete or one or two songs could be missing. At the beginning of the announcement from the stage, the next to last track, you can here a conversation amongst audience members wondering if they will play one more song, so that would confirm that "Ressurection" is most likely in the encore spot. Bruce comments during the PSA from the stage that after the show there will be a jam, there is also a comment by someone, probably a club employee, from the stage after "Run Shaker Life" to stick around for the jam session coming up. So unless the taper decided not to tape certain songs this is likely the complete show though it is possible there was a second encore.

This is the only extant near complete audio of Springsteen playing at The Upstage, an historically important club to the Asbury Park music scene and an historically important audio document of Asbury Park's most famous musician playing there. In addition, it is only the second audio that has surfaced of Bruce playing at this legendary club. The first being 3 songs from the soundboard of the following night and last Steel Mill show.

For an audience recording in the era, the recording is very good, close to the stage with overall good clarity. There is some swooshing sound to the highs, normally I might attribute this to too much eq applied but based on the lineage (cassette > reel > CDR) it is likely in the recording itself. Samples provided.

The taper tuned off the recorder between songs therefore many of the beginnings are missing, fade ins and outs were already applied by the taper, I did clean the transitions up a bit.

Thanks go out to "DGPIRL" for recognizing the possibilities and the MVP of the story "TAD", without her initial curiosity this recording may have never found its way to us 46 years after it's taping. And finally, to Pete (Brucebase) our resident expert helping nail this one down.

09 - Won't Get Fooled Again

A fairly decent audience recording (bit of distortion) that I picked up from a trade a while back
(whoever it was, Thanks!)
This date from 1975 is noteworthy along with a few of the others from the start of the tour because
of a few deviations from the standard 75 setlist, namely, "Heaven And Hell"
(which Pete remarks is much requested), "Tattoo" and "Eyesight To The Blind" in the Tommy section.
The show also features a rare Keith Moon drum solo inbetween "My Generation" and "Naked Eye"
Before playing My Generation Pete winds the crowd up by announcing "Bellboy" (much requested that night)
and then promtly says that they can't play it because the Performing Rights Society has blocked it
in the Manchester area!

After ripping to Wav, I used Audacity to remove some gaps between tracks.
However, it seems there are still a couple of dropouts and edits present. See Me Feel Me has
a dropout toward the end and there is an fadeout between this and the next song as if the tape was changed here.
Sadly there are a few tape wobbles during Won't Get Fooled again but nothing too bad.

Notes: I was in a group that won the pit lottery. Not exactly a sweet spot for audio recording but who the hell cares? I got to watch an amazing show from the best "seat" in the house. The recording could probably benefit from EQ, declapping, etc. but that's not my thing.

I have excellent video of 9 songs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx7OzIA-nsBugxqZ1fU_udcQ4tEv80jJF

No EQ'ing.

Incomplete show (11 songs) in stereo soundboard quality, the sound is not perfect but the stereo separation is great.
The last song from the soundboard tape is an incomplete "Luxury".
It has been spliced together with a great audience recording.
It also has two bonus songs, Heartbreaker and Fingerprint File (average audience quality).
Good, fast paced show, but the recording has a lack of atmosphere.

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
Here is a slightly lesser known bootleg recording of The Who from the fall of '75 "Who By Numbers" tour. The source, which was obtained fairly recently through online means, is typical of audience recordings of this era, perhaps even slightly inferior. To begin with, the overall level of this recording was little more than a whisper and the noise level was thus, fairly significant. Apart from the overall level of the source, the recording was also very muddy sounding, with unwanted low to low mid range frequencies forming a layer of muffled noise atop the musical elements of the recording. I have attempted to remove some of this unwanted noise and the apparent abundance of tape layer and possible multiple transfer noise built up over time as well as additional resonating frequencies perhaps from the original source recording. As usual I have decided against any form of noise reduction apart from a few very small click removals in several places where loud clicks/pops were apparent. This is not noticeable and does not affect the audio inversely in any way. I believe the result of this editing has been successful and a better sounding recording has emerged. It's far from perfect and still contains a significant noise level along with other negative sound elements. Regardless, it is an improvement over the source material which to me, makes it worth keeping for Who collectors.
